René Descartes (31 Maret 1596 - 11 Februari 1650) adalah seorang filsuf Perancis yang sangat berpengaruh, matematikawan, fisikawan dan penulis. Dia dikenal karena argumenya yang berpengaruh dalam dualisme substansi, di mana pikiran dan tubuh dianggap memiliki esensi yang berbeda, satu makhluk yang ditandai dengan pikiran, yang lain dengan ekstensi spasial. Dia telah dijuluki sebagai "Bapak Filsafat Modern" dan "Bapak Matematika Modern." Dia juga dikenal sebagai kartesius.
